Little Harbour, Porthpean, Cornwall

The project comprises the construction of a new building to form the third children’s hospice for the Children’s Hospice South West and has been designed and constructed in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The project has been designed to minimise the impact on the surroundings, especially regarding the ‘long views’, but it has also been designed with a no-compromise approach to quality of design and construction.

The building comprises five care bedrooms and associated facilities, parents bedrooms, administration areas and further communal accommodation.  The hub of the building is the viewing tower which provides vertical access and a focus for arrivals and departures. The tower at the highest level provides uninterrupted views of the sea, across the Fowey Peninsula. The top level was set to achieve this outlook at the concept design stage via the aid of a ‘cherry picker’.

The building has been set into the side of a gently sloping western facing pasture on a formed plateau to provide a degree of protection from the east whilst lowering it’s impact on the landscape. The building has also been designed to maximise the views to the west, with far reaching views towards Bodmin Moor. This hospice like the previous two, is a flagship development.
