Charlton Farm, Wraxall, Bristol

Description of the works

The project comprises the refurbishment of an existing model farm together with new buildings to form a second children's hospice within the grounds of the Tintesfield Estate for Children’s Hospice South West. The project took some five years from start to finish and involved the practice in a full range of project management services from land acquisition through to off-site infrastructure provision.

The site was Grade II listed, set in historic parkland and designated “greenbelt”. A strategy was developed to obtain a valid planning permission, subsequently ratified by the Government Office South West. In total some 300m2 of accommodation and associated facilities has been established and the Hospice stands as a flagship design in child health provision.

Charlton Farm has been developed to minimise the impact of the structures within the landscape by the use of grass roofs on new building work, existing buildings have been refurbished to the highest standard with a view to very little future maintenance. The scheme opened for children in April 2007.
