𝐂𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐅𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 - 𝐀𝐥𝐚𝐧 𝐆𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧 𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐖𝐂𝐈

The Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate (ICWCI) is delighted to recognise Alan German, who was awarded the grade of 𝗙𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 on 25 September 2026.

Alan joined The Institute of Clerks of Works and Construction Inspectorate (ICWCI) in 2017 as a Licentiate member, progressing to full Corporate Membership in 2019. His advancement to Fellowship marks the latest stage in a professional journey that reflects his experience, commitment to construction quality and dedication to the Clerk of Works profession.

Alan’s career as a 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 began somewhat unexpectedly.

After the company he worked for went into liquidation, an agency contacted Alan and asked whether he would consider a 𝗖𝗹𝗲𝗿𝗸 𝗼𝗳 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 role. His son had previously told him that the role would be ideally suited to him. As Alan now reflects, “He was right.”

Alan subsequently secured a position as a Clerk of Works with Aster Housing Association, covering Devon and Cornwall. Two years later, he joined GATES CONSULTANTS, where he helped establish and develop a full-time Clerk of Works service within the business.

As part of that role, Alan contributed to the development of inspection, reporting and recording processes, drawing on his practical knowledge and experience to support the delivery of good-quality construction.

An aspect of the profession that Alan particularly values is the opportunity to pass that knowledge on to others. During his career, he has helped apprentices develop their understanding of new-build housing, following construction from the earliest stages through to completion. That commitment to developing others continues today.

Reflecting on his decision to apply for Fellowship, Alan explains:

“I applied for Fellowship because it represents how much I value the work I do and the importance I place on ensuring buildings are constructed to a good standard and in accordance with the specification."

“The Clerk of Works carries a significant level of professional responsibility. The role requires attention to detail, knowledge, experience and accountability."

“I am extremely proud to have reached the position of Fellow and, after all these years in the profession, it is difficult to put into words just how much it means to me.”

Alan’s journey reflects a continued commitment to professional development and to the standards represented by ICWCI.
